Wittenham Clumps

๐Ÿ“Little Wittenham, near Wallingford๐Ÿ“2.5 milesโฑ75 minsโšกModerate

South Oxfordshire's most iconic landmark: two wooded hills with spectacular views, flat meadow walks around the base, and excellent den-building woodland for children.

Off-Lead

Partial off-lead

Off-lead in the meadow areas. Dogs must be on leads when cattle are grazing on the hills (seasonal). Check Earth Trust signage on arrival.

Pram / Pushchair

~ Partial

The flat meadow walk around the base of the clumps is manageable with a robust pushchair. The hill climbs are not suitable for pushchairs. A good option is to walk the flat meadow circuit and let older children climb while one adult stays with the pushchair.

About This Walk

Wittenham Clumps is the defining landmark of South Oxfordshire: two rounded hills topped with ancient woodland, visible for miles in every direction. Managed by the Earth Trust, the site offers two distinct walking experiences. The hill climbs to both summits are steep but rewarding, with panoramic views stretching across the Thames Valley to the Chilterns and beyond. The flat meadow circuit around the base of the hills is entirely different: a gentle, peaceful walk through wildflower meadows with the hills rising dramatically on either side. The fenced woodland areas on both summits are outstanding for den building, and the cattle that graze the hills seasonally add to the sense of a working, living landscape. The Plough at Long Wittenham is a short drive away for a post-walk lunch.

Family & Children

For Your Dog

Off-Lead

Water for Dogs

River Thames visible from the summits. Water access at the base of the hills near the car park. Bring a travel bowl for the climb.

OPW Trainer Tip

The steep hill climbs are excellent exercise for fit adult dogs but should be avoided in hot weather. The flat meadow circuit is a better option on warm days. The variety of terrain, from open meadow to dense woodland to chalk paths, makes this a rich sensory experience for dogs.
