Just two miles east of Oxford city centre, Shotover Country Park is one of the best-kept secrets in Oxfordshire for dog owners. This 280-acre ancient woodland and heathland site sits on a ridge above Headington, offering sweeping views across Oxford, a network of well-maintained trails, and the freedom for dogs to run off-lead throughout. Entry is free, parking is free, and the park is open year-round from dawn to dusk.

Shotover is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), designated for its rare plant communities, ancient woodland, and diverse wildlife. The park supports over 30 species of butterfly, rare orchids in the meadow areas, and a healthy population of deer. For dog owners, this means the experience is genuinely different from a manicured park: your dog is exploring real, ancient landscape, full of scent, texture, and interest.

From a training perspective, Shotover is an excellent environment for recall practice, building confidence in woodland settings, and introducing dogs to a variety of terrain and wildlife scents. The mix of open heathland and dense woodland means you can vary the challenge depending on your dog's stage of training.

"Shotover offers something rare in a city this size: genuine ancient woodland, free to explore, just minutes from the centre of Oxford."

1The Walks

Shotover has no fixed waymarked routes: the network of paths through the woodland and heathland allows you to create your own walk, from a short 20-minute loop to a full 2-hour exploration of the entire park. Below are three popular options to get you started.

The Woodland Loop

Easy
๐Ÿ“
Distance
1.5 miles
โฑ
Duration
35 to 45 minutes
๐Ÿฅพ
Terrain
Woodland paths, some roots and uneven ground

Start from the main car park on Old Road and follow the central woodland path east into the heart of the ancient oak and ash woodland. The canopy here is dense and beautiful in all seasons. Loop back via the southern path, which runs along the lower edge of the woodland with occasional views across the valley. This is the most popular route and well-suited to dogs of all ages and fitness levels.

The Heathland Ridge Walk

Moderate
๐Ÿ“
Distance
2.5 miles
โฑ
Duration
60 to 75 minutes
๐Ÿฅพ
Terrain
Open heathland, some steep slopes

From the car park, head north-east through the woodland and emerge onto the open heathland at the top of the ridge. On a clear day, the views across Oxford are exceptional: you can see the spires of the city and, on very clear days, as far as the Chilterns. The heathland is home to rare plants and butterflies in summer. Dogs love the open space here for a proper run. Return via the eastern woodland path.

The Full Park Circuit

Moderate
๐Ÿ“
Distance
4 miles
โฑ
Duration
90 minutes to 2 hours
๐Ÿฅพ
Terrain
Mixed: woodland, heathland, some boggy sections after rain

A full circuit of the park taking in the ancient woodland, the heathland ridge, the meadow areas (where rare orchids bloom in early summer), and the quieter northern sections of the park. This route is best suited to dogs with good recall, as the meadow areas can have deer and ground-nesting birds in spring and summer. Boots are recommended after rain as some sections become boggy.

2Wildlife and Nature

Shotover is a designated SSSI, which means it supports plant and animal communities of national importance. As a dog owner, it is worth knowing what you might encounter and how to manage your dog responsibly in this environment.

๐ŸฆŒ Deer

Roe and muntjac deer are present throughout the park. Keep your dog on-lead or ensure solid recall if deer are nearby: chasing deer is both dangerous for the deer and illegal.

๐Ÿฆ‹ Butterflies

Over 30 species have been recorded at Shotover, including the rare White Admiral. The heathland and meadow areas are particularly rich in summer.

๐ŸŒธ Rare Orchids

The meadow areas support rare orchid species in early summer. Please keep dogs on the paths in these areas to protect the ground flora.

๐Ÿฆ Ground-Nesting Birds

During spring and early summer, ground-nesting birds may be present in the heathland. Dogs should be kept close and under control in these areas between March and July.

Site of Special Scientific Interest

Shotover Country Park is managed by Oxford City Council and is a designated SSSI. Dogs are welcome throughout the park, but owners are asked to keep dogs under close control in the meadow and heathland areas, particularly during the spring and summer months, to protect the rare flora and ground-nesting birds. Bag and bin all waste: bins are provided at the car park and at several points along the main paths.
