Before any dog joins Oxford Pet Whisperers, they go through an assessment. This is not a formality. It is a structured evaluation of your dog's behaviour, decision-making, and suitability for a group training environment.
Because daycare, when done properly, is not just about supervision. It is about creating the right environment for dogs to learn.
01. Why Assessments Matter
Not every dog is suited to daycare. And more importantly, not every daycare is suited to every dog. In a group environment, dogs are constantly learning from other dogs, from the environment, and from what behaviours get reinforced.
Without the Right Foundations
- ×Dogs practise over-excitement
- ×Unwanted behaviour is rehearsed
- ×Dogs become harder to manage at home
Assessment Ensures
- ✓Your dog is safe
- ✓Other dogs are safe
- ✓The environment stays structured and productive
Assessment is also a legal requirement under the Animal Welfare Regulations. It is not optional for any responsible dog care provider.
02. What Happens on Your Dog's First Day
We ask you to bring your dog in early. This allows us to start with one-to-one time, where we assess confidence levels, ability to engage with humans, and initial behaviour in a new environment.
From there, we carefully control how your dog is introduced to the space. This is not a case of letting them in to see what happens. Every step is deliberate.
How We Introduce Your Dog
One-to-one time with a trainer to build initial confidence
Observation of the space before any interaction with other dogs
Gradual introduction to one calm, settled dog
Use of quieter areas to build confidence first
Increased exposure only when the right behaviours are shown
"The goal is not to see if your dog will get on with others. The goal is to see if your dog can stay calm, make good decisions, and respond to guidance."
03. What We Are Actually Assessing
We are not looking for a perfect dog. We are looking for a dog who can remain calm in a group environment, respond to human guidance, be safely interrupted when needed, and co-exist without escalating behaviour.
| What We Can Work With | What We Do Not Accept |
|---|---|
| ✓Excitable dogs | ×Dogs showing aggression |
| ✓Dogs who jump up | ×Dogs unable to cope around others |
| ✓Dogs with limited training | ×Dogs who cannot be safely managed in a group |
We are a structured daycare. We are not a rehabilitation facility. If your dog needs more intensive support, we will tell you clearly and point you in the right direction.
04. A Key Difference in Our Approach
Many dog care providers observe behaviour. We do not. We interrupt behaviour early and teach the dog what to do instead.
Jumping
becomes
Taught to sit
Over-arousal
becomes
Guided into calm
Escalation
becomes
Interrupted before it builds
"Every behaviour a dog practises gets stronger. That is why we are deliberate about what behaviours are being rehearsed in our care."
05. What If Your Dog Is Not Suitable?
If your dog is not suited to daycare, we will tell you clearly and honestly. This is not a failure. It simply means a different approach is needed first.
Our priority is always what is right for your dog, not just filling spaces. Some dogs benefit more from one-to-one training, structured behaviour work, or gradual exposure before joining a group.
Some dogs may not be ready for flexible or occasional daycare. In these cases, we may recommend more consistent attendance, a structured introduction plan, or additional training alongside daycare. This helps the dog build confidence, learn the environment, and develop better behaviour over time.
Alternative Pathways We May Recommend
- →One-to-one training sessions
- →Structured behaviour work before group introduction
- →Gradual exposure with a consistent attendance plan
- →Additional training alongside daycare
06. What You Can Expect as an Owner
After your dog's first day, you will receive a full update on how they settled, insight into their behaviour, and clear next steps. We do not just tell you if your dog was fine. We explain how they think, respond, and learn.
Full Behavioural Update
A detailed account of how your dog settled, what they found easy, and what needs work.
Insight into Their Thinking
We explain how your dog responds to the environment and other dogs, not just whether they were well-behaved.
Clear Next Steps
Specific guidance on what to practise at home and what to expect in the coming sessions.
Final Thought
The goal of daycare should not be: "Does my dog enjoy it?"
It should be: "Is my dog learning the right behaviours?"
At Oxford Pet Whisperers, that is what we focus on. Every day your dog spends with us is a training opportunity, not just a supervision session.
